Editor’s Desk: A Date With Oprah – Super Soul Sessions

My friend Casandra gave me the most amazing gift ever when she invited me to attend the Los Angeles Super Soul Sessions hosted by the ultimate curvy lady – Oprah! From the moment she called it was countdown since my week left me in need of some serious spiritual healing.

(8) eight hours and (10) ten healers in one day and without exaggeration the most life changing experience I’ve ever had. Each speaker had such a great sense of humor and authentic messages that weren’t just “spiritual speak” but real guidance on living as a spiritual being in the real world.

Each speaker chose a topic and took the audience on such a wonderful ride with laughter and tears of joy and more  “aha” moments than anyone could have ever predicted. From “The Anatomy of Trust” to “The Heart and Soul Of A Comeback” there was something for ever person in the room.

“Normal is so basic” – Janet Mock

“I’ve made a lot of money just being myself” – Oprah Winfrey

The message I knew I had to share with you my Swaggerettes, is to open your hearts to discover who you truly are and be that fully. This means a courageous journey building a life with compassionate and loving people around you. We can no longer waste time feeling “less than” or not recognizing the beauty of our spirit and our bodies in the here an now.

As no one else could, Oprah ended the day performing the Maya Angelou poem “Phenomenal Woman”. Print it, cut it out and put it in every room of your house to remind you of the phenomenal woman you are.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can’t touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them

They say they still can’t see.

I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need of my care,

‘Cause I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.  – Maya Angelou
